Ice Cleats Basics
What are ice cleats?
Ice cleatsare traction aids that fit over your footwearprovidingadditionalgripwhen walking on slippery or icy conditions. These have spikes underneath them thatbiteinto the slippery iceand packed snowso users can walk safelytherebyminimizing accidents from falling off.
Do ice cleats really work?
Yes.They have aggressive ice-biting studs made from materials designed topierce through ice and packed snow, thereby providingextragrip to your footwearwhile walking outdoors during winter.
Can ICETRAX help reduce the risk of slips and falls?
Yes. ICETRAX ice cleats are designed to help improve traction on snow and ice, which can reduce the risk of slips and falls in winter conditions.
However, no traction device can eliminate the risk completely. Always use caution on slippery surfaces, especially on stairs, steep slopes, smooth indoor floors, or when moving between different surfaces.
What are the best ice cleats?
The best ice cleats are the ones that fit securely, provide reliable traction, are easy to put on, and are built to handle the conditions you plan to use them in.
When choosing ice cleats, look for:
A secure fit
Ice cleats should stay firmly in place on your footwear without shifting, slipping off, or needing constant adjustment.
Strong traction
Quality spikes or studs help provide grip on icy and snow packed surfaces. The type of traction you need may depend on whether you are walking, running, hiking, or working outdoors.
Easy on and off design
A good pair of ice cleats should be simple to put on and remove, especially when you are heading in and out during winter.
Durable materials
Winter conditions can be tough, so look for ice cleats made with strong rubber and durable traction components that can stand up to repeated use.
Do I need to change the way I walk when using ICETRAX?
No. ICETRAX ice cleats are designed to let you walk naturally while helping improve traction on snow and ice.
Once secured properly over your footwear, ICETRAX should feel stable and comfortable underfoot. While you do not need to change the way you walk, you should still use caution in slippery winter conditions and pay attention when moving between surfaces such as ice, snow, pavement, stairs, or indoor flooring.
Do ICETRAX ice cleats work on black ice?
Blackiceis a nearly transparent film of ice on a dark surface (such as a paved road or a body of water) that is difficult to see. These do not have enough icelayer for the crampons to bite into, thus theunderfoot traction is not optimal; we recommendstayingalert when walking on these surfaces.
Choosing the Right Product
How do I choose the right ICETRAX ice cleats?
Start with how you plan to use them.
For everyday winter walking, choose a lightweight, easy to use model that provides dependable traction on sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and snow packed paths.
For running, hiking, or more active use, choose a model with stronger underfoot traction and a more secure fit to help keep the cleats in place during faster movement or uneven terrain.
For work or long hours outdoors, choose a more durable model designed for repeated use in tougher winter conditions.
The best choice depends on your activity, footwear, and the surfaces you walk on most often.
Which ICETRAX model is best for everyday walking?
For everyday walking, we recommend ICETRAX V3.
V3 is a practical choice for daily winter activities like walking the dog, getting the mail, running errands, commuting, or moving across icy sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots. It offers dependable traction while staying easy to put on and take off.
If you want stronger traction for more demanding conditions, you can also consider ICETRAX Pro.
Which ICETRAX model is best for running or hiking?
For running, hiking, or more active winter use, we recommend ICETRAX Pro.
The Pro series is designed with 11 strategically placed cleats to provide 360° traction on snow and ice, making it a strong option when you need more grip and stability during active movement.
For hiking or longer outdoor use where the spikes may see more wear over time, ICETRAX V5 is also a good option because it features easy to replace spikes.
Which ICETRAX model is best for work or industrial use?
or work or industrial use, we recommend ICETRAX Pro or ICETRAX V5, depending on the type of work environment.
Choose ICETRAX Pro if you want strong traction for outdoor winter work, job sites, parking lots, loading areas, sidewalks, or long periods on snow and ice.
Choose ICETRAX V5 if you expect frequent use and want the added benefit of replaceable spikes over time.
Always check your workplace safety requirements before using any traction device on the job.
Are ICETRAX ice cleats suitable for seniors?
Yes. ICETRAX ice cleats can be a great option for seniors who want added confidence while walking on snow and ice.
For seniors, we recommend choosing a model that is easy to put on, fits securely over winter footwear, and provides steady traction for everyday walking. ICETRAX can help make common winter activities, such as walking to the car, getting the mail, or going for a short walk, feel safer and more manageable.
Are ICETRAX ice cleats suitable for industrial work environments?
Yes, certain ICETRAX models may be suitable for outdoor work environments where snow and ice create slipping hazards.
They can be used by workers who spend time walking across icy sidewalks, parking lots, job sites, loading areas, or outdoor facilities. For industrial use, choose a durable model with strong traction and a secure fit.
Always check your workplace safety rules before using any traction device on the job.
Sizing & Fit
Do ICETRAX fit over winter boots?
Yes. ICETRAX ice grippers are designed to fit over most winter boots. The flexible design allows them to stretch over your footwear while staying secure during use.
For the best fit, check the size guide and choose your size based on the boots you plan to wear most often.
Which size would fit my boots?
ICETRAX ice grippers are available in two sizes, S/M and L/XL, and are designed to fit a wide range of winter boots.
Men’s sizing
S/M: Fits sizes 5 to 9
L/XL: Fits sizes 9.5 to 13
Women’s sizing
S/M: Fits sizes 6.5 to 10.5
L/XL: Fits sizes 11 and up
For the best fit, choose your size based on the footwear you plan to wear with your ICETRAX.
Do ICETRAX fit over sneakers or casual shoes?
Yes. ICETRAX can fit over many types of footwear, including sneakers and casual shoes, as long as the size and shape of the shoe allow for a secure fit.
For winter use, we recommend wearing ICETRAX with footwear that already provides good support and warmth, such as winter boots or sturdy outdoor shoes.
My shoe size does not appear on your size chart. Will these still fit me?
It is best to pay your local dealer a visit to try thesetraction devices toconfirmwhether they will fit your boots.
Do men and women use the same ice cleats?
Yes. ICETRAX ice grippers are unisex. Men and women can use the same ice cleats, but sizing is based on your shoe or boot size.
Use the men’s or women’s size guide to choose the best fit for your footwear.
Do you have ice cleats for kids?
We currently do not offer traction cleats for young children.
What should I do if my ice cleats feel too loose or too tight?
If your ICETRAX feel too loose, first make sure they are properly positioned over the toe and heel of your footwear. The grippers should sit securely under the sole and should not shift around while walking. If they still feel loose, they may be too large for your footwear.
If they feel too tight or are difficult to stretch over your boots, you may need a larger size, especially if you are wearing bulky winter boots.
I have limited hand strength. Are ICETRAX easy to put on?
Yes. ICETRAX are designed to be easy to put on and take off, with a flexible fit that stretches over most footwear.
If you have limited hand strength, we recommend putting them on while seated and using both hands for better control. Place the front of the gripper over the toe of your shoe or boot, then stretch the back over the heel until it sits securely in place.
For an easier on and off option, we recommend MIDFLIP. It is designed for quick application and removal, making it a good choice for anyone who wants added traction with less hand strength required.
Using ICETRAX
How do I put on ICETRAX ice cleats?
ICETRAX ice cleats are designed to slip on over your footwear in seconds.
Place the front toe cap of the ice cleat over the front of your shoe or boot, then pull the back of the gripper over your heel until it sits securely in place.
If your ICETRAX model includes a Velcro strap, loop the strap through the opening with the Velcro side facing upward, then fasten it securely around your footwear.
Can you run with ICETRAX ice cleats?
Yes, certain ICETRAX models are suitable for running in winter conditions. For running, choose a model that fits securely over your footwear, provides strong traction on snow and hard packed ice, and includes a strap for added stability.
Can you hike with ICETRAX ice cleats?
Yes, ICETRAX ice cleats can be used for hiking in snowy or icy conditions. For hiking, choose a model with strong traction and a secure fit, especially if you will be walking on packed snow, icy trails, or uneven terrain.
Can I wear ICETRAX indoors?
MIDFLIP is the best option for people who frequently move between outdoor and indoor surfaces. Its transitional spike system helps minimize stud contact on smooth surfaces, making it more suitable for short indoor transitions.
Most other ICETRAX ice grips are designed for use on packed snow and ice only. Because they have metal studs underneath, they should not be worn indoors.
Wearing studded ice grips on smooth indoor surfaces can increase the risk of slipping, and wearing them on carpeted areas may create a tripping hazard. They may also scratch or damage flooring.
Can I drive while wearing ICETRAX?
No. ICETRAX ice grips should not be worn while driving.
The metal studs can affect how your feet move on the pedals and may create a safety risk. Always remove your ice grips before driving.
Can I cycle while wearing ICETRAX?
No. ICETRAX ice grips should not be worn while cycling.
The metal studs can interfere with pedal contact and foot movement, which may create a safety risk. Always remove your ice grips before cycling.
Can you walk on concrete with ice grips on?
ICETRAX ice grips are designed for use on packed snow and ice. They should not be worn on smooth concrete, sealed concrete, or indoor concrete floors, as the metal studs may increase the risk of slipping or damage the surface.
Short contact with rough outdoor concrete may happen when moving between snowy or icy areas, but we recommend avoiding extended use on bare concrete. For best performance and safety, use ICETRAX on snow packed and icy surfaces.
What surfaces should I avoid while wearing ice cleats?
Ice grips should not be used on smooth surfaces. Avoid walking on tile, ceramic, linoleum, sealed concrete, epoxy floors, or sheet metal, including sheet metal that may be hidden under snow.
Using ice grips on these surfaces can increase the risk of slipping, tripping, or damaging the surface.
Can ice cleats damage indoor floors
Yes. Ice cleats with metal studs can scratch or damage indoor floors, including tile, ceramic, linoleum, sealed concrete, epoxy, hardwood, and other smooth surfaces.
They may also increase the risk of slipping on smooth indoor floors or tripping on carpet. For best safety and to protect flooring, remove studded ice cleats before going indoors.
If you frequently move between outdoor and indoor surfaces, consider MIDFLIP, which is designed for easier transitions.

How long are ICETRAX ice cleats supposed to last?
ICETRAX ice cleats are made with durable TPE rubber and strong tungsten carbide or carbon steel traction components, depending on the model. With proper use and care, they are designed to last through multiple winter seasons.
Product lifespan can vary depending on how often they are used, the surfaces they are worn on, weather conditions, and the type of activity or work environment. Frequent use on rough, bare, or abrasive surfaces may cause the cleats to wear down faster.
For best results, use ICETRAX on packed snow and ice, avoid extended use on bare concrete or indoor surfaces, and store them properly when not in use.
For best results, use ICETRAX on packed snow and ice, avoid extended use on bare concrete or indoor surfaces, and store them properly when not in use.
How do I clean and store ice cleats?
Cleaning ICETRAX is simple. Wipe them clean with water after use, then allow them to dry in a cool area before storing.
Avoid storing your ice cleats in hot places or areas exposed to direct sunlight, as excessive heat may affect the materials over time.

Are trekking poles necessary when walking on snow or ice?
Trekking poles are a helpful tool for added balance, support, and comfort when walking on snow or ice.
They are especially useful on uneven terrain, steep inclines, descents, or longer winter hikes. Trekking poles can help reduce stress on your joints, support better posture, minimize fatigue, and provide extra stability when conditions are slippery or unpredictable.
They can also be useful for testing snow depth, checking uncertain ground, or adding confidence during winter hikes.
What are the best practices for using trekking poles?
For the best support, keep your elbows close to your sides and move the opposite pole and leg together as you walk.
On flat ground, adjust the pole length so your elbow rests at about a 90 degree angle when the pole tip touches the ground.
When walking uphill, shorten the poles by about 5 to 10 cm to improve leverage and help pull yourself upward. For steeper climbs, you may need to shorten them further.
When walking downhill, lengthen the poles by about 5 to 10 cm for better balance and stability. Plant the pole tips securely before stepping down, especially on steep descents.
Use the wrist straps for support, but make sure they are not too tight or too loose. Keep your grip relaxed to reduce hand fatigue.
After each hike, wipe your trekking poles with a damp cloth to remove dirt, mud, or debris that could affect the moving parts.
Which hiking pole accessory should I use?
Trekking poles come with carbide tipsthat works great onpacked ice and hard dirt trails, however, whenwalking on asphalt or pavement, use therubber orboot tipto cover the carbide tip for better stability. When walking through muddyareas, amud basket can be installed and used alongside the carbide tiptokeep mud away fromyour pants. And when you planto go snowshoeing or winter hiking, snow basketswould help keep your poles afloat the snow.
I have a three section adjustable pole. Which section should I adjust?
Start with the lowest section first and lengthen it to the appropriate height or until you hit the stopmark. When you’ve reached the limit of the lower section, proceed to adjust the middlesection. It’s always easier toreachmid-section, sothis area is the most often used when hiking.
